Camper Van Window Install

Cutting a great big fuck-off window hole in the side of a perfectly good van is slightly unnerving but altogether quite essential  if you’d like to see out of it.

Putting windows in the van was most definitely a two man job. You could do it by yourself but there would be a lot of room for catastrophic cock-ups. I managed to source a pair of decent privacy windows from a supplier in the UK of which only one arrived intact. The other was a soggy box full of a billion shards of glass which the supplier kindly replaced.

There’s a load of useful clips online on how to install a window in a van and I followed this helpful yet terribly produced mind-fuck of a video.

Now, this whole process took me and my Old Man the best part of an afternoon to do. We only had to buy a couple of metal cutting disks , and I used a nibbler drill attachment which was probably a bit of waste for a job like this as the curves and ribs you encounter tend to challenge the device a bit.

Window Fitting Services

Here in the UK there are quite a few places that offer windows with a free fitting service. The nearest place to me is about 50 miles and the only reason I didn’t get a professional to do it was because it would save me time on the driving but I suspect after all the fannying about that it might have been more efficient to make the trip.
And I wouldn’t have had the hassle with the smashed window in transit.

My feeling on this is that unless you are in the arse end of nowhere it might be worth your while taking the van to get windows fitted. Dealing with if yourself is a great learning experience but unless you have all the time in the world, or several vans to do, I’d get some else to do the heavy lifting.
